The Growth of Movements

At the end of the 1990s, counting the movement we were a part of, I could count around eight to ten total church-planting movements (CPMs) in the world. In 2003, I estimated there were around thirty. In 2008, a group of colleagues and I estimated seventy-eight CPMs. As of October 2017, our coalition (called 24:14) has solid documentation of more than six hundred, with many other ministries close to the movement stage as well. That’s 49 million new disciples and 3.6 million churches in twenty years.

From Spirit Walk, by Steve Smith, page 71.

Let’s put that in list form:

  • 1999 - 10 movements

  • 2003 - 30 movements

  • 2008 - 78 movements

  • 2017 - 600+ movements, 49 million new disciples, 3.6 million churches

I’ll add this number from The Kingdom Unleashed, by Jerry Trousdale and Glenn Sunshine:

  • 2018 - 650

What if we continue that list with data from 24:14 for the last two years?

  • 2021 - 1371 movements

  • 2022 - 1965 movements, 114 million new disciples

There are real life movements of disciples and churches in every inhabited continent (sorry penguins) and among every worldview, in both rural and urban contexts.

Why not your people? Why not your place?

What’s it gonna take?
